FAQ

Application & admission

The FH Kufstein only accepts applications submitted online. Applicants will find a comprehensive description of the application procedure in the introduction to the online application as well as in the Guidelines for Applicants.

The admission procedure is divided into 2 parts for all Bachelor and Master programs.

Part 1 is the online application.

Part 2 is the admission interview.

More details on the admission procedure you can find in the guidelines for applicants.

The prerequisite for admission is taking part successfully in a personal interview. Due to the current situation, the 20-minute online interview will be held online via Microsoft Teams. You will receive all information on this from our application team in good time by e-mail.

An interviewer team representing the chosen degree program will aim to get an impression of the candidate with regard to his/her motivation and aptitude to study. During the course of the discussion, the individual candidate will have the opportunity to present him-/herself, elaborate on his/her motives for wanting to study, talk about his/her plans for the future, and so on.

Candidates are notified within approximately 14 days by email whether they have been accepted or not.

In the process of the online application, you will need to upload the documents listed below. Please use the file formats indicated and be aware that the maximum size for each document is 5 MB. The documents are:

  • your curriculum vitae in tabular layout (format: odt, doc, docx, pdf);
  • copies of your certificates, transcripts, diplomas, etc., or, if applicable, a copy of your latest school report card (format: pdf, jpg, jpeg, gif);
  • if available, documents confirming your practical experiences, for example, employment or internship certificates and/or letters of reference from employers (format: pdf, jpg, jpeg, gif);
  • Proof of citizenship (Copy of passport/identity card)
  • a recent portrait photo of yourself (format: jpg, jpeg, bmp, gif).

Please note that your online application can only be concluded if all of the steps (including document upload) have been fully completed. To confirm that you have successfully completed the online registration, you will receive, at the end of the process, an e-mail notification with a summary of the information you provided.

Unlike in Germany, in Austria there is no numerous clausus regulation (restricted admission based on grades point averages). However, students must successfully pass an entrance examination and interview to study at a university of applied sciences.

Candidates must have at least one of the following qualifications.

  • General qualification for university entrance.
  • German qualification for entrance to a university of applied sciences in a related field; additionally, students must take the qualification examinations in Mathematics, German and English (at the level of secondary-school leaving exams) within the first two semesters of study at the FH Kufstein.
  • Certificate of eligibility to study in a specific field at the tertiary level.
  • Vocational diploma.

Successful completion of a (minimum) 3-year vocational school at the secondary level or an education in the dual system (apprenticeship related to the degree program you are a candidate for); additionally, students must take the qualification examinations in Mathematics, German and English (at the level of secondary-school leaving exams) within the first two semesters of study at the university of applied sciences. Students from the dual system must also provide proof of a minimum of 2 years work experience in a related industry.

To begin a master’s degree program, a candidate must have a diploma from a tertiary institution (bachelor degree or the traditional Diplom from a university or university of applied sciences).

Yes, if you have successfully completed a (minimum) 3-year vocational school at the secondary level or an education in the dual system (Austrian apprenticeship), then you are eligible to begin studying at a university of applied sciences. However, within the first two semesters of study at the university of applied sciences, students with this background must take the qualification examinations in Mathematics, German and English.

For all new students who begin studying without a secondary school-leaving examination or a general university entrance qualification, the FH Kufstein provides preparation courses for the compulsory qualification examinations in Mathematics, German and English. These prep courses are offered through the FH Kufstein Tirol International Business School GmbH. Enrollment in the German course is obligatory; participation in the Math and English courses is voluntary but highly recommended. Exam candidates can choose the examination dates that best suit their own schedule; however, candidates should keep in mind that all exams must be passed within the first two semesters. In connection with this, candidates should be aware that the English and Math exams are only administered in the winter semester and the German exam is only administered in the summer semester.

  • Candidates who have successfully completed a 3-year vocational school at the secondary level or an education in the dual system (Austrian apprenticeship related to the degree program you are a candidate for);
  •  Candidates with a German qualification for entrance to a university of applied sciences in a related field, and with poor grades in the subjects German, English, and Mathematics.

Credit transfer and exemption may be possible for successfully completed examination requirements or certified coursework in specified fields. The director of studies of the degree program the student has been accepted to is responsible for deciding whether transfer and exemption can be granted.

Dates & deadlines

You will find an up-to-date list of deadlines here.

Generally speaking, the winter semester runs from the end of September to the of January, and the summer semester starts at the beginning of March and stretches until the beginning of July. The exact starting date of the first semester will be communicated in a personal letter or e-mail.

The students in the degree programs at the FH Kufstein follow a specific curricular build-up, and therefore it is only possible to matriculate in the winter semester.

Tuition fees & grants

The tuition fee is €363.36 per semester. For exceptions take a look here. In addition, the fee for the Austrian Students' Union (ÖH) is to be paid together with the tuition fee every semester. It is then forwarded to the ÖH.

Once the training contract has been accepted, the initial tuition fee for the entire first academic year (726.72 Euros) is due.

In the event of a contract withdrawal or early termination, the refund will be staggered depending on the time of withdrawal or termination.

The tuition fees collected from students flow directly into the budget for the educational side of operations at the FH Kufstein, to cover or partially cover the costs of, e.g., maintaining the library, contracting external lecturers, organizing student excursions, and providing equipment for student use, which includes scanners, printers, and printing quotas.

EU, EEA and Swiss citizens do not have to pay a tuition fee deposit. Third-country applicants have to pay a tuition fee deposit of € 100 with their online application. Applicants who apply for more than one program have to pay the deposit only once. The application documents will be checked and processed as soon as we have received your payment.
The tuition fee deposit will be credited against the tuition fees on commencement of studies. Applicants who do not fulfill the admission requirements, fail to attend the entrance examination or decide not to take up the offer of a place will have their deposit refunded, less bank charges and exchange rate differences. More information.

The FH Kufstein does not provide financial aid to students, except in the form of special achievement awards (e.g., Best Brains). However, there are many institutions and agencies which make scholarships and other forms of financial aid available to students. Have a look here.

Yes, in case of a disability of at least 50% (proof of disability passport) the FH Kufstein Tirol grants a 50% waiver of the tuition fee for the duration of the studies. All details about studying with a disability

Teaching & course content

Lectures
In lecture-type courses, the course instructor plays a major and active role in conveying mainly theoretical knowledge and demonstrating practical applications to the students. In general, students are evaluated by means of a summative examination that is administered at the end of the course.

Tutorials
In tutorials, students are offered the opportunity to apply, test and train their recently acquired knowledge in the context of practical assignments and case studies provided by the instructor. This type of course format also allows the instructor to determine how well the students have grasped the studied concepts and, wherever necessary, give additional input by way of various didactic approaches. The students are usually evaluated over the duration of the tutorial (formative assessment).

Integrated courses (including those courses focused on personality development, in particular, social skills)
Integrated courses offer a dynamic environment focused on practically-oriented education and training. They are particularly valuable in preparing students to meet the demands of higher level courses in their studies and of the professional world. As determined by the course instructor, students are evaluated using either a formative or summative approach.

Projects and internship
For projects, students work in small groups (5-10 persons) on realistic assignments, which are generally defined by external clients such as companies and other organizations. The students take responsibility for the management of their project, and present their results in the form a project report or presentation. In this type of course the instructor takes on the role of project coach. In general, students are evaluated based on their performance as they progress through the project (formative assessment).

Seminars and workshops
In seminars, the students take a decidedly active role. Under the guidance of the instructor, students work independently or in small teams on specific problems in order to consolidate their knowledge of the subject matter. It is up to the students to select the problem-solving approach, apply the appropriate methods, and work on a solution to the problem. The students wrap up the process by writing a paper and doing a presentation in front of the class. The instructor, in the role of coach, provides support to the students as necessary. In general, students are evaluated by two or more partial examinations during the course (formative assessment). The Bachelor Seminars I and II are an exception: here the bachelor theses I and II represent the final examination papers (summative assessment) for the respective course.

Excursions
Excursions (study week abroad) give students an intensive opportunity to refine their intercultural competencies. The students are given responsibility for organizing a large part of the excursion themselves. In cooperation with the partner institution that is the destination of the excursion, classes are offered and visits to companies are arranged, during which students learn about and discuss the cultural and economic particularities of the respective country.

Compulsory electives
Compulsory elective courses are offered as part of the curriculum in the master degree programs. Students choose from several available options to give their studies a specific focus, while also fulfilling the credit requirements for the degree. These electives are also open to qualified exchange students who have come to the FH Kufstein for their semester abroad.

Extra-curricular electives
For extra-curricular (non-credit), continuing education courses offered at the FH Kufstein, please visit the site of the FH Kufstein Tirol International Business School GmbH.

Examinations

Examinations are to take place in a timely manner after the subject matter has been covered in the context of the course. The exact examination procedure – including contents, methods, and evaluation criteria – for a course as well as the possibilities for repeating failed examinations are transparently communicated (e.g., by way of the course syllabus) to the students by the instructor at the beginning of the course.

In general, examinations are either summative or formative. Summative examinations are comprehensive examinations that test students’ understanding of the material and concepts covered during the course, and are thus usually held at the end of the course. The grade a student achieves on the exam is also the grade the student is awarded for the course. For courses that use the formative approach, students are generally evaluated by means of two or more partial examinations, which might include some combination of a mid-term and final exam, written papers, homework assignments, and in-class presentations, etc.

Very often class size depends on the number of students enrolled in a given degree program for a given year. However, in general, the maximum class size for lectures is 70. For language and IT courses, for example, the program’s class is broken down into smaller groups.

In general, yes. Attendance is checked and documented by means of attendance lists in all lectures. With a note from the doctor and for other good reasons, students may be excused from their classes (please contact the administrative assistant of your degree program).

In most degree programs, English is offered as the first foreign language and French, Italian, Spanish, and Russian can be studied as a second foreign language. Students should be aware, however, that it is not always possible for the FH Kufstein to offer all languages in a given year: the specific demand for certain languages by the students determines the courses that can be organized (a minimum number of participants is required for a course to start). However, apart from these required courses, students may opt to participate in the foreign language courses offered by the FH Kufstein Tirol International Business School GmbH.

Yes, as part of the international strategy of the FH Kufstein, a number of courses in the degree programs is held in English. For one, students should thus be well-prepared to participate actively in the classes during their semester abroad. Moreover, a strong English-language background should give students an edge when working in an international environment.

The faculty of the FH Kufstein is very international. A majority of the full-time faculty members have their roots in Austria or Germany. The language lecturers are typically native speakers.

All full-time bachelor programs oblige students to spend a semester abroad at one of the partner universities of the FH Kufstein. The curriculum of the degree program “International Business Studies” even requires that students go abroad for two semesters. The part-time bachelor degree programs, because their students are also working professionals, do not have a semester abroad in their curriculum; instead, these programs offer their students a compulsory study trip that lasts approximately 2 weeks (subject to change).

Ideally, the professional internship should be done abroad. The internship may be done at a company in Austria if the company is internationally active. In any case, it is essential that students chose an internship related to their direction of study. The minimum duration of the internship is 10 weeks.

LIVING IN KUFSTEIN

Permeability in the higher education system & qualification

  • Students can expect to graduate from an FH in a fixed number of semesters.
  • FHs have compulsory attendance for all lectures.
  • The curriculum and examination schedule of the degree programs at FHs are predefined.
  • FHs have a limited number of places in each degree program they offer.
  • Because of the way they are structured, FHs have sufficient capacity with regard to lecture rooms, lecture room seating, computer workstations, project and meeting rooms, technical equipment (copy machines, printers, scanners, etc.), and so on.
  • Because of the good student-lecturer ratio at the FH, students can expect personal supervision from the FH faculty.
  • The latter three points mean that FH students don’t have the problems of overflowing lecture halls and delays in getting into tutorials and seminars.
  • FHs offer a scientifically grounded, vocational education at the tertiary level.

Not at all. A bachelor’s degree from the FH Kufstein is an internationally recognized degree. Therefore, with a bachelor’s diploma you are eligible to continue your studies in a master’s program elsewhere. However, please be aware that the entrance requirements and criteria for your next step at another institution may differ significantly, and therefore must be considered carefully.

Generally speaking, yes. However, the entrance requirements for individual institutions or specific master’s programs may vary, and therefore these should be considered carefully before investing time and energy in the application process.

With the successful completion of a master’s degree at a university of applied sciences like the FH Kufstein, students are eligible for continued study at the doctoral level in the same field, at a university in Austria or abroad. In other words, a master’s degree from the FH Kufstein is an internationally recognized degree.

For most of the degrees conferred at the FH Kufstein, the designation is:

  • Bachelor of Arts in Business (BA)
  • Master of Arts in Business (MA)

For Example Graduates of the degree programs Web Business & Technology or Industrial Engineering & Management are awarded as

  •  Bachelor of Science (BSc)

Network & partners

The FH Kufstein has a network of partner universities that currently comprises more than 215 institutions. As regards the selection of a partner institution for the semester/year abroad, students must first enter their preferences for specific institutions into a list circulated by their degree program. The degree program staff then allocates the students to the places at the partner institutions, taking into consideration the students’ preferences. The grade point average of the students also plays a role in the allocation process: in cases where more students wish to go to a university than there are exchange places, the students with the higher GPA are given priority. The International Relations Office (IRO) at the FH Kufstein is there to prepare students for and to support them in making the most out of their foreign experiences.

The University of Applied Sciences Kufstein Tirol has a comprehensive network of companies to help students as much as possible with climbing their personal career ladder. You can find more information about this on the website of Alumni & Career Services. The Company Cooperation News offer an excerpt of practical project partnerships with companies.

Thanks to the practically oriented education and the international qualifications, given by the semester and internship abroad, graduates of the FH Kufstein are regarded as highly qualified employees in their field. In fact, the partner network of the FH Kufstein supports this claim: more than 40% of our graduates have their first contact with their future employer through the professional internship.
